Our Looks and Our Self Esteem - a Direct Correlation

How we view ourselves touches every aspect of our lives. This is especially true with looks self esteem. This is the way we see ourselves. It may or may not be an accurate view.

If we feel bad about ourselves it shows. This poor self image is reflected in the way we dress, speak, act, and socialize. Looks self esteem is often lacking in women. As care takers, we spend our days working (in or outside the home), taking care of the family, tending to everyone else's wants and needs. When it comes to ourselves, there is not a lot of time or energy left. Many of us do not exercise like we should and we do not take time out to pamper ourselves. This should change.

How does exercise effect your looks self esteem? If you are overweight, most likely you are unhappy about it. The fact that the media shows all of these twig thin models as the "norm" does not help the situation. Many people (including men) do not want to go to a gym to exercise if they are overweight because they feel self conscious about how they look. It is really hard to feel secure working out when the person next to you looks like Hercules pumping iron. In order to overcome this situation, very strong feelings and attitudes must be dealt with.

Can low looks self esteem be overcome? Yes, it can but it takes a lot of work. We all know someone who does not want to have their picture taken -- ever! Usually people like this have poor self esteem. They do not want a permanent image of themselves looking and feeling bad. Who would! To overcome this you need to address the real issues and that is where it gets difficult. Attention all moms -- take time out for you. It is something you must do. This does not mean you have to go to a gym.

Go to the library for some quiet reading. Take a walk in the park. Get your nails done or have a pedicure. Save up some money and go to a day spa. Get a group of other moms together and have a mom's night out at a local restaurant -- no kids or husbands allowed! Even if you are not a mom, take time for you. Working all day, (or the stress of looking for work) can take a lot out of you. Be sure to take time for you so that you can renew and refocus your energies. While it may not cure your self esteem problems, it will make you feel better.
