Self Esteem - Further information

Self esteem is defined as a "… realistic respect for, or a favorable impression of ones self…" (Random House 2006). So why is this so important?

Low self esteem manifests itself in many ways. People who are not happy with themselves tend to get sick more often, take part in dangerous or harmful behaviors, or just seem to "shoot themselves in the foot" whenever they try to accomplish something. Adults who have a low self image tend to get into bad relationships.

This does not mean the people in these relationships are bad people, it just means that those two particular individuals should never have been together. If you do not respect yourself or like yourself it shows in your everyday actions. It affects the way you dress, the way you speak, your body language and everything about you.

One thing to consider, and this is serious, if you are having a hard time coping and making it through the day, or if you cry a lot or feel really sad, if you feel that you cannot get out of bed, call a professional. Those are all symptoms of clinical depression and it can be treated by a doctor or therapist. The best way to improve your image is to improve how you feel about yourself.

How do you improve your self esteem? There are many ways to do this. Some people take self esteem building courses, some buy books and tapes, others listen to motivational speakers, and some get life coaches. There is an easy way to build self esteem, and this works especially well for those parents who do not work outside the home. Make a list of everything you accomplished in that day.

Even the most mundane tasks should be listed. Include the laundry, dishes, dog walking, crisis resolution with children's teachers, billing disputes with the cable company, driving 4 kids to 6 different activities, etc. Then look at your list. Does this explain why you feel that you live in your car? Can you see that you accomplish more in one day than a lot of people do in a month. Look how valuable you are to your family and friends.

It is so important to have good self esteem or self worth. Try a few of the suggestions listed here and see if they help.
